Progress Without Morals
A scientist is trying to harness microbial properties to develop a fantastic tool. He believes he can; but should he?
Story
Such uses of this biological tool are precisely what worried Rufus. He had been working with his mentor Lord Worvull for many months now. The applications of Worvull’s research were what brought Rufus onto the project. Rufus had joined to make a name for himself, to impress his family, but most importantly, to contribute to his society. He had been enthusiastic about the research until a few weeks ago. His brother had been killed fighting a rival nation. Now his mind was filled with sadness and doubt. Would this tool truly help his people, or would it sow chaos? He remained tightlipped regarding his emotions, but his sentiments were reflected in his work. A tension had been built between him and Lord Worvull. Worvull’s research was nearly at its precipice, and Rufus’s work was slacking.
“What is the matter with you boy? We have nearly arrived at the solution I set out to produce all those years ago, and I find you wallowing around and slowing our progress?”, Worvull exclaimed.
“My Lord, how sure are we that this will only be used to defend our country, and not to be used against all others?”, Rufus asked.
“Is that what bothers you? Oh please, any tool can be used for good or worse. Now get back to work or I’ll find a new assistant surely twice as efficient as you!”
“But surely not all tools have the same potential. Some of our subjects even showed ulterior effects, what if…”
“What if what? Kinks must be worked out, but I am nearly finished. We are here to make a name for ourselves, not to worry about the politics or uses of such tools. Many subjects have shown control. My symbiotic method works. Near instant communication between individuals. A single commander could now defend and lead our country’s military without the need of a messenger. Since you do not have the stomach to follow through with this research, then you must leave!”
If Lord Worvull kicked Rufus from the project, he would deprive himself of both a pupil, and a moral compass. What happens to progress when our morals are tossed to the side?
