Water Bloom

The red glow was disappearing, the light was already dim, and the vast dark landscape meant it was hard for the people to tell when it was light or dark. The main continent is surrounded by ice and the people use magnetic boats to move from one continent to another. The accumulation of iron causes most of the planet to look red, orange, and yellow. The 30-degree tilt of the planet means only two seasons, extreme cold and extreme heat. 

The churning of the ice as it is turned to water by the scientist. 30 years at the job but the 400-day years make the scientist seem younger than he is. For 10 out of those 30 years, he has been able to get away with it but his lies have caught up with him. A global warning has been sent to everyone that it is time to ration the most essential element – water. The scientist doesn’t know what happened, everything went awry 10 years ago when he killed the glowing aliens that came to the lab, trying to tell him to let him in because something was wrong. The kettle which evaporated the ice to make water now only produced 5% of the water output that it made before. 

10 years ago, Genera had discovered Quirky in the alley. It was a secret because Quirky had an endless supply of water – the now rationed resource. They were able to communicate through symbols but Quirky was getting more lonely because there was no one else of his kind. 

Genera’s birthday a special box was at her door. “It is time,” the note said. Attached was an address and a magnetic boat to travel on the ice. Genera took Quirky and they made it to their address – the lab. Genera knocked on the door and hid Quirky behind her back. All the scientist saw was a normal teenager, so he let Genera in. Then the Scientist saw it, another glowing alien, he knew it was the end. But instead of killing the scientist, Quirky said two words “Forgive you”, the only words it has said before and since. The Quirky began to open like a flower in bloom and there in the center words began to appear until Genera could see clearly that they were instructions on connecting the lab to another secret lab. Genera saw it in Quirky’s eyes, he was gone, his purpose had been accomplished. Now, it was Genera’s turn, she connected the two labs and water production went back to its original output and the truth was revealed. The creators of Lab 2, knowing it would only have to be used if there was government corruption, installed cameras connecting everything that happened in Lab 2 to the nation’s national news. After all the citizens heard of Genera’s hero act Genera was elected Planet Leader and all the prior leadership, including the scientist, were put in jail. Genera had finally done it. She had finally made her family proud.
